Best Golf Courses in North Carolina
Located in the famous Sandhills region of North Carolina, which is known for having some of the best golf courses in North Carolina, Carolina Trace’s greens were built by renowned architect Robert Trent Jones. With so many great golf courses in the triangle area of NC, ours stand out among the rest. Carolina Trace offer two greens for members to play on:
- Lake Course: Along the shore of our beautiful 315-acre Lake Trace, this 18-hole course has stunning views that are on-par with the high quality of this course.
- Creek Course: The rolling terrain and accompanying creek make this 18-hole golf course as challenging as it is scenic.

The Robert Trent Jones Legacy
Our Lake and Creek courses were designed by legendary architect Robert Trent Jones Sr., in 1971 and 1979, respectively. During his career, he designed or re-designed nearly 500 courses in at least 40 states in the U.S. and 35 countries around the world. At Carolina Trace Country Club, members are fortunate to have two courses designed by such a world-renowned architect.
Robert Trent Jones Sr. worked with golf legend Bobby Jones on the Peachtree course in Atlanta and again on the Augusta National course, the home of the annual Masters Tournament. Jones Sr. became a national celebrity with his complete redesign of the Oakland Hills South course for the U.S. Open Tournament in 1951. He immediately became the “Open Doctor,” and in quick succession, redesigned such major venues as Baltusrol-Lower course, Olympic-Lake course, Southern Hills, Oak Hill and Congressional Country Club.
Among the many courses Jones Sr. designed are:
- Dorado Beach in Puerto Rico
- Bellerive in Missouri
- Hazeltine in Minnesota
- Shady Oaks in Texas
- Upper Montclair in New Jersey
- Spyglass in California
In addition to these accomplishments, Jones Sr. helped found the American Society of Golf Course Architects, and was the first golf course architect inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in St. Augustine, FL.
Continuing to Step Up our Game
Carolina Trace is dedicated to maintaining the beautiful golf courses and surrounding land our members enjoy so much. In 2015, the Lake Course underwent extensive renovations led by well-known golf course architect David Welchel. We hope to continue updating our greens over the years, giving the game new life. Much like our community itself, our passion for golf never stops growing.
